Man schlage Brücken, um weit Auseinanderliegendes zu verbinden. „Sie sind wie ein Handschlag.“ Er stellt seine kleinformatigen Ölgemälde, Aquarelle und Zeichnungen aus Würzburg und Weymouth im Kunsthaus Michel aus.

Der akademisch ausgebildete Maler sieht in Motiven, was andere nicht sehen: Stimmungen, Verbindungen und Emotionender rollenden Hügel, des Meeres und der Küstenlinie des Weltkulturerbes Jurassic Coast in Dorset, wie auch den Main, die Festung und die Brücken in Würzburg. Man sieht ihn malend in Weymouth, der Stadt am Meer, mit seiner Handstaffelei wie schon einmal und nun auch wieder in der Stadt am Main. So geben sich beide Städte die Hand.

Er sieht nicht nur das verbindende der Hebebrücke im Hafen von Weymouth und der Alten Mainbrücke in Würzburg. Er ist selber ein Brückenbauer: Bithell schickte während der Pandemie Menschen kostenlos seine Werke, die ihnen Trost in der Einsamkeit des Lock-downs spenden sollten. Das wurde in einer landesweiten Sendung verbreitet. „Kunst baut Brücken zwischen Menschen,“ sagte er damals.

Vom 13.10. bis 14.11.2025 lädt das Kunsthaus Gerd Michel die Würzburger Kunstinteressieren ein, sich in den stimmungsvollen Bildern aus Weymouth und Würzburg zu verlieren. Die Würzburger Gruppe der Urban Sketchers ist mit ihm in de Stadt unterwegs. Er selbst trifft sein Publikum am 28.10.2025, 19 Uhr. Um ihnen die Hand zu reichen und Brücken zwischen Weymouth und Würzburg zu bauen.

‘I love bridges,’ says English landscape painter Stephen Bithell from the southern English port town of Weymouth. Bridges are built to connect things that are far apart. ‘They are like a handshake.’ He is exhibiting his small-format oil paintings, watercolours and drawings from Würzburg and Weymouth at the Kunsthaus Michel.

The academically trained painter sees things in his motifs that others do not: moods, connections and emotions in the rolling hills, the sea and the coastline of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, as well as the river Main, the fortress and the bridges in Würzburg. You can see him painting in Weymouth, the town by the sea, with his hand-held easel, as he did before and will do now again in the city on the river Main. This way, the two cities shake hands.

He not only sees the connection between the lift bridge in Weymouth Harbour and the Old Main Bridge in Würzburg. He is a bridge builder himself: during the pandemic, Bithell sent people his works free of charge to comfort them in their loneliness of the lockdown. This was broadcast in a nationwide programme. ‘Art builds bridges between people,’ he said at the time.

From 13 October to 14 November 2025, Kunsthaus Gerd Michel invites Würzburg art lovers to lose themselves in the atmospheric images from Weymouth and Würzburg.The Würzburg group of Urban Sketchers will be out and about in the city with him, too. He himself will meet his audience on 28 October 2025 at 7 p.m. to shake their hands and build bridges between Weymouth and Würzburg.
